Rabies is transmitted through bites, scratches, or contact with the saliva of infected animals. The disease is almost always fatal. The Federal Office of Public Health recommends vaccination for people with an increased risk of contact or transmission, such as veterinarians or travelers to countries where rabies is widespread. Rabies prevention consists of two vaccine doses administered 28 days apart. If the risk of exposure continues, a booster vaccination is recommended after 12 months.
