Fatigue, exhaustion or an increased susceptibility to infections can be signs of iron deficiency. Ferritin is the protein that stores iron and indicates how well your iron stores are replenished. A small sample of capillary blood from your fingertip is sufficient for the test. We also measure CRP to ensure the ferritin level is interpreted correctly. The sample is analysed at our partner laboratory. Results are usually available within 24 to 48 hours. We will discuss the results with you, suggest treatment options if necessary, or recommend further medical investigation. This test is also suitable for monitoring progress following iron therapy.

Please prepare for the ferritin test as follows:

• Drink plenty of fluids and do not take any biotin in the 24 hours leading up to the blood test.
• It is not necessary to fast before the blood test.
• On the day of the blood test, avoid nicotine, alcohol and strenuous exercise.
• If you have an acute infection, inflammation or a fever, please postpone your appointment by at least 2 weeks.
