Testosterone deficiency in men – an underestimated issue

Many men suffer from symptoms without realising that a testosterone deficiency is the cause. Testosterone deficiency is an underestimated issue that can affect strength, mood and quality of life, and is often much easier to recognise than one might think.

What is testosterone deficiency?

Testosterone is an essential hormone that is responsible not only for reproduction, but also for numerous other functions in the body. Testosterone deficiency, also known as hypogonadism, refers to a condition in which a man's body produces too little testosterone. This can affect many areas of life – from physical performance and mental health to overall quality of life.

Typical symptoms of a deficiency can include:

  • Weakness and reduced muscle mass
  • Exhaustion and listlessness
  • Low libido or erectile dysfunction
  • Depressive moods or irritability
  • Increased belly fat and reduced bone density

Many men attribute these symptoms to age or stress, unaware that a hormone deficiency could be the cause.

Why is it so important to talk about this?

Testosterone deficiency is widespread but often goes undiagnosed because it is frequently considered taboo. According to studies, one in five to ten men over the age of 50 are affected – but only a fraction seek medical help. Untreated deficiency can have long-term consequences, such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease or depression.

However, timely diagnosis and treatment can improve many things:

  • Quality of life increases.
  • Physical and mental complaints can be alleviated.
  • The risk of secondary diseases is reduced.
